Construction of the airport was approved by the State Council and began in March 2015. Comprehensive inspections and trial flights has been conducted and the airport is prepared for full operations. Kweichow Moutai Group has invested 2.44 billion yuan ($362.4 million) in the project and built a liquor exhibition hall in the 15,000-square-meter airport terminal.

The airport is expected to be able to annually handle 6,548 flights, 5,500 tons of cargo and a passenger volume of 550,000 people by 2025.

Guizhou province aims to build a general aviation network in 10 to 15 years, with almost every county reachable by helicopter.
