The new main structure of Pingsha Water Purification Plant was topped off on July 29, and trial operation is expected by the year's end, it was announced by Zhuhai Water Group Co Ltd on August 1.
According to Zhang Guanglong, head of engineering management, there are 15 water purification plants in the city, of which 10 are run by Zhuhai Water Group. The Pingsha plant in Gaolan Port Area is one of them, which can process 30,000 tons of wastewater per day at present.
As it strives to meet national requirements and the growing demand for sewage treatment, the city government has decided to upgrade and expand the plant, listing it as a key project for 2017. Upon completion, the plant will lift sewage treatment capability to 80,000 tons per day with water quality improved from Grade 1B to 1A.

The biggest difference between Grade 1B and 1A lies in the concentration of Escherichia coli in the wastewater. The sewage at Grade 1B and 1A contain respectively 10,000 and 1,000 Escherichia coli per liter. One will normally serve as clean water, while the other can be used for landscape irrigation, said Luo Haihua, a technical specialist from Zhuhai Water Group.
Among the 10 water purification plants run by Zhuhai Water Group, two are already up to or above Grade 1A, with Pingsha and Sanzao water purification plants working on it and another six in preparation.
