Rainwater runoff not acceptable in Jinwan District

Jinwan District is noticeably becoming a sponge city in accordance with Zhuhai's Three-Year Action Plan on Sponge City Construction (2016-18), creating water-related ecology, safety, environment, landscape, and culture.

The "sponge city" concept is a green development program that uses parks, wetlands, and drainage systems to collect, filter, and store rainwater and take the excess away from built-up areas to reduce dangerous and polluted runoff.

Work on fulfilling the target is well under way. For example, Jinwan Interchange landscaping, scenery additions along Zhuhai Avenue in Jinwan, and Jinshan Park have been completed within the Sponge City concept, which is also being applied to the Central River embankment.

As planned, 62 renovation and 22 construction projects for residential communities will be initiated throughout the district. Some hospitals and universities in the district will also follow suit. 

Jinshan Park 

Engineering work includes green roofs, concave-down greenbelts, permeable pavements, and rainwater gardens. The entire project is to begin in the first half of next year, and be conducted over several stages.

Last year, the city's first "sponge park" -- Jinshan Park -- opened to the public at Jinwan Aviation New Town, developed by Huafa Group.

The 100,000-sq-m Jinshan Park has greenery of 87.25 percent and absorbs rainwater for reuse, acting as a guidepost for the district in Sponge City construction.
