The first domestically made "grid-based double-stranded and closed-loop operation" technology was initiated in Hengqin New Area on July 24, reaching world-advanced level in terms of power grid supply.
After a series of transmission ability improvements and modifications since 2014, Hengqin now has two green substations capable of direct voltage downgrade from 220 kV to 20 kV, laying the foundation for greater power generation.
In a 20 kV-below distribution network, the new technology, which has taken two years to develop, not only adds supply channels but also reinforces the average distribution of electric current. Now, power failures are unlikely even in case of malfunction, according to Chen Jiandian, project head of distribution network planning and management at the Zhuhai Power Supply Bureau of Guangdong Power Grid Co Ltd, a subsidiary of China Southern Power Grid (CSG).

It is more flexible with high economic efficiency, reaching nearly 100 percent power supply reliability, Chen stressed.
Moreover, a pioneered control system allows for self-repair operations for circuit protection. The innovations received expert praise at a CSG Sci-tech Projects Appraisal Meeting held on March 12. A consensus was reached that the Hengqin project established several firsts, reaching an international leading level in terms of high reliability of urban power supply network planning and key construction technology research and applications. The grid structure performance and the multi-level self-repair coordinating technology are also globally advanced.
Reports state that the active move comes in response to heavier industrial demand because of increasingly bustling economic activity, especially with the establishment of the China (Guangdong) Pilot Free Trade Zone Hengqin Area of Zhuhai in 2015.
