Container throughput at East China's Ningbo-Zhoushan Port soared in May, mainly due to China's Belt and Road Initiative and the integration of Zhejiang province's sea ports, Ningbo Daily has reported.

Throughput at Ningbo-Zhoushan Port in May was around 2.3 million TEU(twenty-foot equivalent unit), up by 27.2 percent, and in the first five months of this year it reached 10.3 million TEU, up by 14.3 percent on an annual basis.

The port exceeded Shenzhen counterpart in the first quarter of this year and ranked third globally.

With the integration of Zhejiang sea ports, container sources from all over the province are concentrated at Ningbo-Zhoushan Port, waiting to be exported to overseas markets including countries along the Belt and Road.

As the best link between railway and port in East China,  the port has been connected with 30 cities in more than 10 provinces in China and countries along the Belt and Road by railway.

Ningbo-Zhoushan Port has upgraded its hardware and software. "The number of foreign ships being led into the port has increased a lot compared with the same period last year," said Wei Mingjun, a senior pilot at the port.
