A pair of Wuxi citizens recently received Good Samaritan Awards for their role in saving the life of a drowning man while vacationing on the South East Asian island of Sri Lanka in February.

The incident occurred on the evening of Feb 25 when the individual concerned collapsed in the hotel swimming pool. Fortunately, Nie Xing, a surgeon, and Peng Zheng, both workers at a Huishan district health service station, were on hand to provide medical assistance.

The two men performed CPR and artificial respiration while waiting for emergency services to arrive and take the man to a local hospital. The man made a stable recovery.

Although the two men have received praise for their quick and effective action, Nie was keen to stress the routineness of the help they provided given their profession.

"The concepts of respecting life, saving the dying, and helping the injured are integrated in our work and our lives."

Wang Liren, head of a local Wuxi Samaritan foundation, spoke highly of Nie and Peng's proactive and attentive behavior, saying that they set a good example for society.
