Guangdong active on World Environment Day

In addition, officials of the Department of Environmental Protection of Guangdong unveiled a plaque for the Guangdong Provincial Green Supply Chain Association at the event, encouraging member enterprises to take up responsibility for environmental protection.

Several leading Chinese delivery providers, including Shunfeng Express, Shentong Express, Yuantong Express and the State Post Bureau launched a nationwide initiative, calling for green packaging in the industry.

Guangdong province overtook the rest of the country with 7.62 billion parcels in 2016; a figure reflecting the upsurge of parcels delivered in China every year and the boom in online shopping platforms.

Plastic waste wrappers and cardboard boxes are usually disposed with other domestic garbage and seldom recycled, which poses a huge risk to the environment, experts pointed out.

World Environment Day was inaugurated in 1972 following a United Nations Conference on the Human Environment in Stockholm, Sweden – the first international conference on environmental issues.
