The final decision has been made to construct two additional dual-lane roads and two slow-traffic lanes through Banzhang Mt connecting Xiangzhou and Gongbei. The June 1 announcement comes three months after proposals were put before the public in March.
The Zhuhai Downtown Area Traffic Control Task Force said this and an elevated pedestrian circle (flyover) in Qianshan will alleviate traffic congestion and provide convenience during peak hours.
Two dual-lane tunnels and one slow-traffic tunnel will be built on each side of the Banzhang Mt Tunnel, forming an eight dual-lane tunnel cluster. To encourage green transportation, the slow-traffic tunnel will serve non-motorized vehicles and pedestrians and will access the current greenway network.

According to the task force, Banzhang Mt Tunnel has reached its capacity ceiling after having operated for 16 years. Upon completion of the expansion, the traffic capacity in downtown Zhuhai will be further improved with congestions greatly alleviated.
The new tunnels are expected to come under construction by the end of the year and be completed by 2020, Zhuhai Urban Construction Real Estate Development Co Ltd had announced.
In additional to the tunnel expansion project, a pedestrian overpass has been designed for the Qianshan Market section of Santaishi Road and the intersection with West Yuehai Road. They are to be completed by the year-end.
