A conference was held in Sanmenxia on May 10 celebrating 60 years of hydro construction and management.
The Sanmenxia hydro construction project was the first of its kind in China, established in 1957 and completed in 1961.
In the past 60 years, the project has been used for Yellow River flood control, irrigation, water supply, and water and sediment regulation.
Wang Hong, chief engineer for the Ministry of Water Resources, expressed his appreciation to all those who've worked on the Sanmenxia hydro project. Wang said that the project played an important role in Yellow River flood control, helping to power the regional economy and improve local ecology.
"The Sanmenxia hydro project helps us control and stabilize sediment-laden rivers," Wang said. "It is a significant exploration in China's water conservation, making a great contribution to the development of the nation's waterways and hydropower."
Wang expressed his hope that the Sanmenxia hydro project can continue to contribute to the reform and development of China's water conservation.
Yue Zhongming, director of the Yellow River Conservation Commission, said that the Sanmenxia hydro project has ensured increased grain production in its irrigation area.
"The project provides precious development of China's water conservation and hydropower," Yue said.
Liu Nanchang, the Sanmenxia's Party secretary said that the administrators of the hydro project should aim to further improve their management ability for the further development of the project.
