In 2015, the total sales value of wholesale and retail trades reached 51.56 trillion yuan ($8.28 trillion), and the total retail sales of consumer goods reached 30.09 trillion yuan, a growth of 10.7 percent from 2014, or a real growth of 10.6 percent after deducting price factors.

An analysis of different areas showed that the retail sales of consumer goods in urban areas stood at 25.90 trillion yuan, up by 10.5 percent, and in rural areas they reached 4.19 trillion yuan, up by 11.8 percent. Grouped by consumption patterns, the retail sale total of commodities was 26.86 trillion yuan, up by 10.6 percent, and that of the catering industry was 3.23 trillion yuan, up by 11.7 percent.

Of the total retail sales of commodities by enterprises above a designated size, the year-on-year growth of sales for grain, oil, food, beverages, tobacco and liquor was up by 14.6 percent; for clothes, shoes, hats and textiles, it was up by 9.8 percent; for cosmetics, it was up by 8.8 percent; for gold, silver and jewelry, it was up by 7.3 percent; for daily necessities, it was up by 12.3 percent; for household appliances and audio-visual equipment, it was up by 11.4 percent; for traditional Chinese and western medicines, it was up by 14.2 percent; for cultural and office appliances, it was up by 15.2 percent; for furniture, it was up by 16.1 percent; for telecommunication equipment, it was up by 29.3 percent; for building and decoration materials, it was up by 18.7 percent; and for motor vehicles, it was up by 5.3 percent. The retail sales of petroleum and petroleum products went down by 6.6 percent.

Online retail sales were 3.88 trillion yuan in 2015, an increase of 33.3 percent compared with 2014. The online retail sales of commodities were 3.24 trillion yuan, an increase of 31.6 percent. Among the online retail sales of commodities, the sales of food increased by 40.8 percent, clothing by 21.4 percent and daily necessities by 36 percent.
